PVAC invites you back into our “home” to participate in Mi Casa es Tu Casa and build an altar to remember and celebrate those who you have lost. This annual exhibit is inspired by Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a traditional holiday in Mexico that celebrates ancestors and others who have passed away. As part of the celebration, people construct altars (ofrendas) in their homes to honor and remember the dead.

Similar customs exist throughout the world – as humans, we share a common ground in our desire to honor and remember those who we have lost. You are encouraged to interpret the Día de Los Muertos altar-making tradition in any manner that honors your own experiences and beliefs.

Backyard Renovation & Mandala Installation

Michele Faia's Egret MandalDon Faia Mandala         "Flower & Bird Mandala" by Michele Faia                                            "Spiral Mandala" by Don Faia

In April we installed two 7-foot mandalas into our backyard patio, designed by local artists and PVAC supporters Don & Michele Faia, who generously donated their talents to this project. Michele's mandala uses Egrets to represent the bird life and abundant nature in this area; Don's uses spirals to represent continuous creative and spiritual growth. Professional layout, etching and color staining was done by local technician and artist Tony Salinas, owner of Art In Cement who was commissioned by Ann & Dobie Jenkins. We cannot thank the Jenkins' & Faia's enough!

And now we're beginning the final phase of our backyard renovation: in May, we will begin planting the landscape designs by PVAC president and Sierra Azul owner Jeff Rosendale. The official patio and garden dedication at the Urban Arts exhibit reception on July 10th. Donations are needed for this final phase of the project for plants, sprinklers, planting mix, mulch, and labor! Please click here to donate or contact the Gallery at 722-3062 or email our staff.

Of course, the initial stages of this renovation were made possible by generous donations from  Dobie & Ann Jenkins, their extended Bradshaw families, and another Jenkins-Bradshaw relative, John Curaton, owner of Coast Concrete. The 1000 square foot patio that was installed last summer will honor Ann's mother, Ysabel Curaton Bradshaw and Ann's aunt, Elizabeth Stratton Bradshaw, both accomplished watercolor artists. We cannot thank the Jenkins-Bradshaws enough!

PVAC Receives $25,000 Grant from Rydell Visual Arts Fund

The Pajaro Valley Arts Council (PVAC) has received a grant of $25,000 from the Rydell Visual Arts Fund administered by The Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County.

This generous grant will be used to fund an expansion of the PVAC Art Education Program. The main component of this program is the school tours offered during the approximately 6 shows each year, including the Sculpture IS show at Sierra Azul. A bilingual staff person leads the tours and with the grant funds, PVAC will be able to budget substantially more tours for shows in 2010-2011.

New officers for the PVAC Board of Directors

At its meeting in February, the PVAC Board of Directors elected a new slate of officers. Jeff Rosendale is now serving as Board President, Susanna Waddell is the Vice-President, and Judy Stabile is Secretary/Treasurer. Congratulations to the new team!

PVAC is Now Accepting Exhibit Proposals for 2013

Got an idea or theme for an exhibit at the Pajaro Valley Gallery? Do you have a love for art and are you available to volunteer your time and energy to guest curate an exhibit? The Gallery Committee is now reviewing exhibit proposals for the 2013 Pajaro Valley Gallery exhibit calendar.

Each year the Gallery mounts two exhibits by guest curators. The PVAC Gallery Committee mentors and works with the guest curator to create a unique exhibit centered around a theme or concept.

PVAC's Sculpture Garden Once Again Is Awarded Prestigious Rydell Grant for the Visual Arts

Congratulations to co-curators Judy Stabile and Jeff Rosendale for the success of our grant application. The generousity of the Rydell Visual Arts Fund at the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County awarding this grant for the 2009 and 2010 Sculpture Garden exhibits enables us to embed the garden, pardon the pun!, into our community as an annual event for visitors to return to again and again.
